The Best Places to Study International Fashion Design

Many of the same fashion rules apply abroad that apply locally: you need education, smart designs, the right connections, and good fashion marketing. Consequently, getting a degree in fashion marketing is a good idea for students trying to get their fashions onto the international runway. Domestically, New York is one of the best places to start building the right connections and to attend fashion school.

The International Fashion Forefront: New York City

New York is home to numerous ethnic and international fashion events. The leaders of Scottish fashion were proud to attend the "Dressed to Kilt" event in New York in April 2007. The "Kilt" event was part of "Tartan Week," said to be New York's premiere event for Scottish culture (or "kilture," as it were). This one-of-a-kind fashion design show was produced in Grand Central Terminal, where a small Scottish village was reproduced (and redesigned to include a runway, of course).
The Scottish event is just one example of New York's strong international influences. Bryant Park always features global representation, and the Garment District boasts a variety of international fashions.

World Fashion, Abroad

Outside the U.S., there are Milan and Paris, of course, but there are also budding new centers of design that are not as exclusive. Toronto, Ontario is a huge center of international fashion design. It's also a great place to learn fashion marketing, as it is chock full of fashion schools and has a thriving garment district.
Or you can market your designs at glamorous runway shows abroad, like the Dubai International Fashion Show in the United Arab Emirates. The Dubai Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a landmark event in 2007, aiming to make the city a hub of international fashion design.
With so many global opportunities, a fashion degree is the perfect first step to show your designs to the world.
