Building a Fashion Foundation

Going to fashion school isn't just a good idea; it's the first step in a fashion career--but one San Francisco student is proving that you don't have to wait for your degree to be finished to start your career.

Finding a Niche

Building a successful fashion career is often just about finding a niche. No famous fashion designer started his or her career designing evening gowns, handbags, throw pillows, and the perfect tee all at once. Some designers go their whole career designing just one thing. (The trick is to do it well.)
Kimberly Ann Wesch, a fashion design school student in San Francisco, already runs a boutique fashion store with her family. She told the Novato Advance newspaper, "I really found my niche in the fashion industry." Wesch is a student at one of the top fashion schools on the West Coast (and in the country, for that matter). That's an added bonus of pursuing a fashion career in San Francisco: it's home to more than one top fashion school.
Wesch was enrolled in a bachelor's program at another Bay Area college before transferring to one of the City's top fashion schools. With her career already begun before she even graduates, it's safe to say Ms. Wesch is doing very well.

Getting a Good Start

While it's true that knowing the right people and a little luck are needed for a successful fashion career, what's even more important is a fashion degree. The knowledge that Wesch acquires in her studies will help make her business even more successful--and the same could happen for you. A fashion degree will help you build a foundation of knowledge which will support your career, no matter where it goes.
