LA Fashion Lessons: The Classroom and Beyond

Fashion events of all kinds in Los Angeles serve to teach aspiring students a few things about the industry. Fashion degrees are more attainable now then ever before, and an education will help you hone your skills and put you on the path to success.

Making it as a Designer

Designer-to-the-stars Bob Mackie's name surfaced again this month when Cher donated many of her gowns, many of them Mackie's, to be auctioned in Beverly Hills. The auction, to take place next month, will feature many of the memorable gowns Mackie created for the famous performer.
Remember, having a hook pays off in fashion design. What was Bob Mackie's? The "curtain dress" he made for Carol Burnett. The rest, as they say, is fashion history.

Making the Grade

The 2006 Los Angeles Fashion Awards are coming up in October. Los Angeles magazine will name seven winners, in categories including fashion innovation, retail and marketing.
Pay attention to the different categories at fashion awards shows. Fashion design school degree programs often reflect these groupings. Fashion retail and fashion marketing, in particular, are courses or programs you can find at almost any fashion school.

Fashion Schools: What is Hip?

Why are fashion schools filling up in LA? One answer can be found on TV. Thanks to the Bravo series Project Runway, fashion design has been thrust to the forefront of pop culture once again. At Otis College, a fashion design school in Los Angeles, the success of recent Project Runway contestant and Otis alum Bradley Baumkirchner prompted an unusually large number of applicants to their program. The same trend can be seen at other fashion schools around the country. If you've always dreamed of making a living in this creative field, why not join the club?
