The Other Side of the Chair: Careers in Dental Assisting

There's no doubt about it: dental assistants are in high demand, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects job growth to only get better. According to the BLS, this career "is expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the 2004-14 projection period." Educational opportunities are growing to accommodate this demand, and online classes provide excellent resource for a career change.

Holding Onto Our Teeth

It might be surprising, but we're keeping our teeth longer than we used to. This is good news not just for people with teeth, but for dental assistants too! More teeth mean more maintenance and care. In many dental offices, the assistant is responsible for patient care. According to the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA), "the dental assistant works in behalf of the patient as well as the dentist in helping to assure a high level of professional excellence in oral health care delivery."

Nice Smile, Healthy Career

The dental assistant's job description changes a bit from office to office, but normally, you would be expected to manage office tasks such as scheduling and billing, perform laboratory duties, and assist the dentist by preparing instruments and materials during procedures. Most importantly, you would be responsible for managing infection control procedures, according to the ADAA.

Online Classes Teach Safety

In order for patients to heal properly, they need clean instruments and materials. Online dental assisting classes will help you learn the rules, regulations, and procedures for keeping your patients safe and healthy.
