Chicago
has four fashion design schools and three fashion design organizations,
but that's not enough for Mayor Richard M. Daley and the new Fashion
Arts and Events council, which was created to develop Chicago as one of
the country's fashion design hubs.
The Fashion Arts and Events Council will be organized within Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs. It will work with the chief executive of Federated Department Stores to create a Chicago Design Shop at the Macy's store on State Street. The workshop will also be a showroom for new fashion designers.
Mayor Daley asked the city of Chicago what it needed to help fashion designers avoid making the move to the east or west. The council is one solution, and will create ways to support these new fashion designers.
One thing is for sure: Chicago is a model city for supporting new fashion design, and for helping build the critical bridge between fashion design school and a fashion design career.
