Why Toronto is a Great Place for a Career in Fashion Design

With many cities in North America vying for the attention of young new designers (Chicago, New York, San Francisco, just to name a few), Toronto has presented itself as a very viable location for a career in fashion design. A bustling fashion district, a notable fashion week, and a new urban arts plan are several reasons why fashion design is growing here.
Then there are the schools -- many students choose Toronto for fashion design school. Some of the best fashion schools can be found in Toronto, not to mention the number of online degrees that can be earned in fashion and coupled with a design internship in Toronto.
Here are 3 reasons why Toronto is great for a career in fashion design:
  1. Great Fashion Schools
Everyone knows that some of the best fashion schools are located in big cities -- New York, Milan and Paris. Toronto has earned membership in this circle by serving as home base to some of the best fashion schools in North America, complete with degree programs that end in fashion design internships or even fashion design job placement.
  2. Toronto Fashion Week
Coming up in October, Toronto fashion week draws tens of thousands to the city every fall, and this year will showcase many new up-and-comers in fashion design, including the designer Kevin Allwood and the fashion design house "On & On."
  3. The New Toronto Urban Arts Plan
Mayor David Miller recently unveiled his 40-page "Strategies for a Creative City," which discusses the many ways Toronto plans to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in the effort to make Toronto a larger center for design. Tax incentives for businesses who hire designers are just one of these creative changes coming up.
For fashion design degrees, jobs, and events, Toronto has a lot to offer.
